The large “Liaqta” or Incan City of Choquequirao, which means “Cradle of Gold”, in Quechua, was erected by the Incas, at 3,103 m. / 10,178 ft. above sea level, and is considered to be Machu Picchu ́s Sacred Sister City, with equal significance and importance, since it is built along similar patterns and lines, although it is situated higher in altitude and is harder to reach.
Furthermore, it is presumed to be about twice as large as Machu Picchu, and to have served the same religious, political and agricultural functions. Finally, it is now considered as one of the last refuges the Incas used, as they were escaping from the Spanish invaders ́ sanguinary cruelty.
In this wonderful scenery, we designed Choquequirao trek the best choice to visit Choquequirao, enjoying the comfort and personalized attention we provide.

After having picked you up at your hotel, we ́ll leave Cusco at 6:00 a.m., on our private vehicle, for a 4 to 5 hour trip to Cachora, an Andean community, located at 2,800 m. / 9,184 ft. above sea level, which is the starting point of the trek, and the place where we ́ll meet our horsemen and their burden horses. Afterwards, we ́ll start a two and a half hour hike towards the Capuliyoc Mountain Pass, at 2,750 m. / 9,020 ft., where we might enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and take amazing pictures of the Apurimac River Canyon. Then, we ́ll keep on descending for another two hours, towards Chiquisca, where we ́ll set our campsite, have dinner and will spend the night.
Meals: Lunch and Dinner.
At 6:00 a.m., we ́ll leave Chiquisca, to go down to Playa Rosalina, which will take about one hour. Then, we ́ll cross the powerful Apurimac River, and will start hiking towards Santa Rosa, zigzagging up a steep slope, which will take about 2 hours. Therefore, it will be important to leave early, so that the after 8 O ́clock heat doesn ́t make the hike too difficult for us to get to our next stopover in Santa Rosa, where we ́ll take a half an hour break, and those who wish to may try “Cambray”, a delicious and refreshing local sugar cane liquor.
Afterwards, we ́ll continue our hike, slowly climbing for two and a half hours, until we reach Marampata, to have lunch, and afterwards, we ́ll walk another two hours, to get to the Archaeological Complex of Choquequirao, located at 3,103 m. / 10,178 ft., nearby which we will set our campsite. Finally, we ́ll enjoy some free time, exploring the Incan benched terraces and buildings, and at sunset, you might decide to sit in a place of your choice, to contemplate the canyon, where large condors are sometimes sighted, in their majestic flight.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
This morning, we ́ll enjoy a complete guided tour of Choquequirao ́s Archaeological Complex, as we will visit its Upper Sector or Hanan, and Lower Sector or Urin, as well as some areas which are still covered by wild vegetation, and other constructions that are ready to be restored into the
way they were when the Incas occupied them. After the tour, we ́ll start our downhill hike back towards Santa Rosa, where we ́ll have lunch. Then, we ́ll continue descending for another 2 hours, to reach Playa Rosalina, at 1,450 m. / 4,756 ft., where we might have time to take a refreshing dip in the Apurimac River ́s waters. There, we ́ll set our campsite up and will have dinner, before resting.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
Today, we ́ll leave our campsite, after breakfast, to start the two to three hour uphill hike to Chiquisca, and make our way to the Capuliyoc Mountain Pass, nearby which we ́ll have lunch. In the afternoon, we ́ll continue on our two-hour return route to Cachora, where a private vehicle will be waiting, to take us back to Cusco, arriving there around 9:00 p.m.
