DETAILED ITINERARY:

Day 01: Visit to the Humantay LagoonStart of the adventure.

This morning, we´ll leave Cusco at 6:00 a.m., on a private transportation vehicle, and will start a scenic ride to the trail´s starting point, in Challacancha. Along the four- hour ride, we´ll pass through the town of Limatambo (2,100 m./6,888 ft.), which was an important access to the city of Cusco during the Incan Empire´s time. Then, we´ll leave Limatambo and ride up a compacted dirt track, along the right bank of the Apurimac River, to reach Mollepata (2,800 m./9,184 ft.), and on to Cruzpata (3,100  m./10,168  ft.),  to  finally  get  to  Challacancha, where we´ll meet our horsemen and their horses. After a short introduction, we´ll start our hike, following the local inhabitants´ paths, on a soft uphill slope towards the base of Mount Salkantay (6,271 m./20,569 ft.). After lunch in Salkantaypampa, we´ll start a rather steep, 2- hour ascension to our camp in Soyroccocha, right next to the impressive Salkantay Glacier (4,200 m./13,776 ft.). This will be a cold night, therefore, we advise you to bring warm clothes with you (optional thermal underwear).

Meals: Lunch and dinner.

Day 02:Reaching the top a long descent, Challenge and Resistance Day

Today,  we´ll  depart  after  an  early  breakfast,  and  will start a 1½-hour ascension, which will bring us up to the well-known Salkantay Mountain Pass  (4,525 m./14,842 ft.). At this point we will enjoy stunning views of the surrounding glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Mountain  Range,  with  Mount  Salkantay´s Southern face towering above us, meanwhile we may also observe chinchillas and condors in their natural habitat.

After  a short break, we´ll  start descending  towards a more tropical climate and into the cloud forest. On the way,  we´ll have  the  chance  to  see  the  remains  of  an ancient  Incan  path  which  is  approximately  6  meters wide.   Then,  we´ll   follow   a

long   path   though  easy descent along the Salkantay River, which brings us to our second camp in Qollpapampa (2,890 m./9,479 ft.), in the late afternoon. This campsite is located in a beautiful area, with some natural hot springs to relax in.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 03:Walk in the middle of the cloud forest, Thermal baths, and relax in Santa Teresa

Today, we´ll continue our hike, with an easy walk along the Santa Teresa River, enjoying the increasingly lush vegetation, passing by waterfalls, as well as by passion fruit and coffee plantations. Then, we´ll walk by the waterfalls, in CoripacchiHuiñaypoko´s settlement and the Andean community of Lucmabamba. In the afternoon, we´ll arrive at our camp, in the village of La Playa (2,155 m./7,068 ft.), where we can freshen up in the river, before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 04: Visit to Llaqtapata and arrival to Machu Picchu town,Relax very close to the wonder

After breakfast, we´ll cross the river and start climbing for 2 to 3 hours, up to El Mirador or Abra Q’elloqasa (2,860  m./9,381  ft.).  There,  we´ll  have  an  exceptional view of the Lost City of the Incas; the legendary Machu Picchu, from a different angle. Then, we´ll enjoy our last lunch in nature, at the panoramic Vantage Point of Llaqtapata (2,650 m./8,692 ft.), from which we´ll be able to contemplate both Machu Picchu and Mount Salkantay, have a good rest, and enjoy the added value of Llactapata´s Incan Architectural Complex which has recently been restored.

Afterwards, a 2-hour downhill hike will lead us towards the Aobamba River, crossing lush bamboo forests, as well as orchards and coffee plantations, all the way to Machu Picchu´s Hydroelectric Plant, from where we´ll board a train bound to Puente Ruinas, (Ruins´ Bridge) traveling by rail, on a short 30-minute scenic train ride. This evening, we will   settled our campsite just at the base of Mount Machu Picchu, have dinner and spend the night there.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 05:Visit Machu Picchu, and Return to Cusco

This morning, we´ll wake up early, to have breakfast and board a tourist bus to Machu Picchu, where we´ll go on a complete guided tour of the Incan City, which will take about two hours. Then, you will have some free time to explore the site on your own, climb up Mount Huayna Picchu (extra fee of $15), if you have booked this activity well in advance, as there is a limit of 400 access tickets a day, to get to experience

spectacular views of Machu Picchu, as a whole, as well as of the valleys and mountains in its surrounding. Otherwise, you could also visit  the  Temple  of  the  Moon  or  the  famous  Incan Bridge.

Early  in  the  afternoon,  we´ll  take  a  bus  down  to  the small  pedestrian  village  of  Aguas  Calientes,  where,  if you want to, you could take advantage of a dip in the local thermal baths. Finally, we´ll take the train back to the city of Cusco, where we´ll arrive after nightfall.
