Take the best advantage of one of the quieter and less traveled routes to Machu Picchu, on this 3 day adventure, high up in the mountains above Cusco, staying overnight just next to the beautiful and remote Incan Architectural Complex of Huchuy Qosqo, which means “Little Cusco” in Quechua, before descending to the Sacred Valley and traveling to Machu Picchu.
Day 1: CUSCO – CHINCHERO – HUCHUY QOSQO.
Day 2: HUCHUY QOSQO – LAMAY – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES (MACHU
PICCHU).
Day 3: MACHU PICCHU – OLLANTAYTAMBO – CUSCO.
Early in the morning, we will pick you up at your accommodation, to travel on a private vehicle, passing through the locality of Cachimayo, continuing to the village of Chinchero, with final destination Tauqaq, a village located on the shores of the Piuray Lagoon, where the whole group will start hiking for about 3 hours, from the village, up to the Tauqaq Mountain Pass, at 4,000 meters above sea level. From there, you ́ll be able to see mountain ranges in all directions, including the snow-capped peak of Mount Ausangate, the highest in the Cusco region, along with others, such as La Veronica, Chicon, Pitusiray and Sahuasiray. Then, we ́ll descend for about 2 hours, passing by some impressive Incan benched terraces and aqueducts, before arriving at the beautiful Incan Architectural Complex of Huchuy Qosqo. Our guide will lead us through the first part of the complex, sharing all its knowledge about this impressive place. Afterwards, a lovely typical Peruvian family will welcome us in their unique mountain lodge. Meanwhile we enjoy a warm drink, take a rest and freshen up, the family will prepare a well-deserved delicious dinner for us. After dinner, the group can relax in the garden around a campfire and admire the sky full of stars, or retire directly to your cozy room for a good night sleep to recharge your energy for the next day.
After breakfast, you will visit the imposing Incan Architectural Complex of Huchuy Qosqo that includes a large open ceremonial center for the second part of the tour. From there, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the Sacred Valley, Vilcanota River and Vilcanota snow-capped mountain range.
After a guided tour and some time to explore Huchuy Qosqo, we ́ll descend on a path in zigzags, to the small locality of Lamay, from which we ́ll have car transportation to Ollantaytambo, to have lunch. After lunch, you will take the train to the small but quite busy pedestrian village of Aguas Calientes, recently re-baptized as Machupicchu Pueblo, where you ́ll have time to relax at your hotel.
Today, the group will have an early breakfast, before boarding one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu, in time to see the Sun rise, and after a guided tour lasting about 2 hours, you will have some free time to explore the Incan city by yourself, perhaps visiting the Sun ́s Gate or the Incan Bridge, and the more adventurous members of the group might decide to climb up either Mount Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu (this has an extra fee). When you are ready, you’ll take a bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to have lunch at one of the village ́s many and quite diverse restaurants, before catching your train back to Ollantaytambo, and getting transferred to Cusco to your accommodation.
